A companion publication to Recipes for living in Big Sur. A “more-than-a-recipe” cookbook about challenges, loss, triumphs and new beginnings when facing wild fires, slides and extended highway closures on the Big Sur coast in California.

The Big Sur Historical Society was founded in 1978 to preserve and promote Big Sur’s rich cultural heritage. Over the years, BSHS has grown to an organization with over 100 members, an Archive building, and a museum located in the historic Ranch House at Andrew Molera State Park. BSHS gratefully acknowledges the cooperation of Post Ranch Inn and the California Department of Parks and Recreation in making space available for our Archive and Museum.

In the winter of 1980-81, six Big Sur women were inspired to create a fund that would sustain the fledgling Big Sur Historical Society in its work of preserving local history. Come January, the call went out to the Big Sur community asking for favorite recipes as well as for diaries, memoirs, photographs, legends and stories of life in Big Sur. The recipes came pouring in as folks searched through photograph albums and old recipe files. By April there was enough material for several books. A pattern finally emerged from the diary excerpts and reminiscences: six overlapping categories evolved into chapter headings: Living Off the Land, Food from the Sea, Self-Sufficiency, The Simple Life, Starting from Scratch and Big Sur Hospitality. The material was selected to express the diversity of life styles that found room to exist in Big Sur. The reader will discover that this is not an ordinary cookbook. Some of the recipes are vague about amounts or ingredients, reflecting the awareness that creative cooks use what they've got on hand. A few of the recipes are artifacts, included to offer a flavor of life as it used to be in Big Sur. Most of the recipes have been taste tested, and the result is a unique blend of history and recipes, expressive of the art of living as practiced in Big Sur. In 1947, Nancy Hopkins left her childhood home in Berkeley, California, to join her husband, Samuel Hopkins, in their newly-built home in Big Sur. As Nancy settled in and raised her children, she chronicled her country life in letters to her parents. Kaffe Fassett’s Quilts in Burano has a collection of 19 great projects exquisitely photographed on location in Burano, a tiny island in Italy’s Venetian archipelago.

In this 22nd instalment of Kaffe Fassett’s ever-popular series of patchwork and quilting books, the quilts have been photographed on location in Burano, a tiny island in Italy’s Venetian archipelago, famous for its lace-making but also for its brilliantly painted houses in myriad jewel colours.

The colourful house walls, sometimes distressed and occasionally decorated with murals, form the backdrop along with the canals, bridges, and boats of this special Venetian Island, to another wonderful selection of new quilt designs from Kaffe and the designers and makers of the Kaffe Fassett Studio.

The collection of 19 quilts features both new fabric designs from the Kaffe Collective and some of the Classics.  Bali Brocade, for example, makes a fantastic background to Kaffe’s sumptuous Shimmer Star quilt (one for the more experienced quilters), with its ripples of pattern in contrasting prints.  His two versions of the very simple quilt, suitable for first-timers, come in two very different colourways.  Hot Steps is a riot of colour – “a technicolour dream of a quilt” according to Kaffe – whereas by contrast its sister quilt, Cool Steps in dusty blues, greens and greys offers a delightfully subtle blend of tones.  Liza Prior Lucy’s rich and dark Turkish Coffee quilt, with its hint of Eastern promise, fussy cuts Kaffe’s new Turkish Delight fabric to brilliant effect.

The gallery of location shots of quilts, exquisitely photographed by Debbie Patterson, is followed by the flat shots, with detailed instructions and diagrams, plus templates were used.  A practical know-how section covers all the information needed by less experienced quilters.

Kevin and Deborah Healy have been making Kaleidoscopes since the early 1990's. The first Kaleidoscopes they remember were the cardboard toys passed among friends in some endless childhood summer under the willow trees between stickball games or tea parties.

Each working kaleidoscope is filled with tiny bits of recycled glass and sea glass making each piece truly one of a kind. The interior shots are just an example of what your unique piece will look like when you gaze through it.

Palo Santo: Created from the essential oils of the sacred Palo Santo trees, this balm was created with the intention of protecting you while you face the challenges on life’s path. Rub onto the temples or the base of the nose to inhale the scent.
Ingredients: Organic Palo Santo essential oil (Bursera Graveolens), organic Cupuacu butter (rainforest butter, Manteiga de Cupuacu), organic Carnauba wax (Copernica Cerifera), beeswax, and a blend of organic oils (sunflower, coconut, macadamia nut and jojoba), t-50 Vitamin E oil. Red Earth Paint: The gorgeous red tones in this organic makeup comes from Chiih, a naturally occurring red Earth pigment. Chiih is a word the comes from the Navajo language. Virginia’s grandmother used to wear it as a sunblock when she was herding sheep. It was also used in Pow Wow dances as face paint, for for protection amongst the Navajo. It is best used as a blush or a rouge.
Ingredients: Chiih (red earth pigment), organic rose hip seed oil, organic coconut oil, organic cocoa butter, organic jojoba oil, beeswax/palm wax (Copernicia Prunifer), T-50 Vitamin E oil. Store in a cool, dry place.

Rose Balm: The Rose Otto oil used in this balm is produced in Bulgaria, and is a truly amazing oil. The Ecuadorian grown cocoa butter adds a chocolate center that is organic and healing on it’s own. This moisturizing balm also has organic rose hip seed oil that is excellent for aging or mature skin. Apply to the face or hands, or wherever else you need.

A large-sized (11x14) coloring book, lovingly created by local artist Bob Muson, features animals from near and far. This coloring book is great for artists of an age, and comes with 29 images to color. "I first published 'Big Sur, Land of the Sun and the Moon' in 1961 as a silk-screened limited edition of 110 copies that were 16 inches wide by 21 inches tall. I printed this edition by hand in a large, one-room redwood cabin tucked away under a tall grove of redwood trees in Partington Canyon, 40 miles south of Monterey, California, on the Big Sur coast. One day, my daughter asked me to buy her a coloring book. Given that I was a professional artist, I decided I would draw images for her to color that were alive in her everyday experience: images of our lifestyle and the creatures living around us, frogs, deer, wild boar, owls, fish, etc. She was delighted! Soon her friends started asking for drawings to color. I promised I would deliver a drawing to each of them weekly. So, once a week I drove up and down the coast slipping drawings into their mailboxes. Finally, unable to keep up with their requests for drawings, I announced to the children that I would make an official Big Sur coloring book, and that would be that! The images of people in the book are depictions of actual people who lived in Big Sur at that time. I included images of elephants, hippopotamuses and dragons at the children's request. After all, what would a book for children be without them! It was the early sixties, a unique moment in time, a time like no other. This book is an icon from that time." -Bob Muson
