Nepenthe’s 75th Anniversary

Owned and operated by Bill and Lolly Fassett, Nepenthe opened its doors to the public in 1949. The Fassetts resided in the historic log cabin nestled on property that was once owned by Orsen Welles and Rita Hayworth. The incandescent beauty of the property was meant to be shared with the public.

This year, Nepenthe celebrates its 75th anniversary and the property has remained just as extraordinary as it was on opening day. Visitors from all over the world have the opportunity to admire the natural beauty that surrounds us all at Nepenthe. With the glorious views of the Santa Lucia mountains that cascade into the rugged coastline, Nepenthe truly encapsulates the vibrancy and tenacity of Big Sur.

Nepenthe is proud to have been serving the Big Sur community for 75 years. In recognition of this incredible accomplishment we are delighted to share the following certifications and records that give a nod to the history of Nepenthe.

Resolution California Legislature:

Presented by the honorable John Laird, 17th Senatorial District and the honorable Dawn Addis, 30th Assembly District. This resolution is a symbolic measure that highlights this family owned and operated business’ success throughout the years. Nepenthe remaining open for the public in spite of the many road closures and natural disasters within the Big Sur area speaks not only on the business it self, but the incredible support given from the dedicated employees.

Monterey County Certificate of Recognition:

Congressional Record:

Honoring Nepenthe’s 75th anniversary by the honorable Jimmy Panetta of California. This congressional record will become part of a historic record, and saved in the library of congress. It is an incredible honor to have the history of what makes Nepenthe a truly spectacular place commemorated.
